It is a wall of smoke.

Majority decision the party moves to the northwest. This takes you deeper into the forest. The trees become older and more dense and the canopy blocks more sunlight. The smell of distant burning wood is in the air. At first the smell reminds you of a warm campfire with meats roasting over, but in time you find yourself hating the smell. It seems to irritate your eyes and cause you to cough a little more.
The day progresses and you make decent time. The rain from the previous day is still something you are dealing with in the mud you are travelling through. Evening sets in and you set up camp. Watch schedule?

During Tony and Trinal's watch you hear the drow horns again. To the west and the southwest. They seem distant.

We'll keep an eye and ear out and make sure to warn the next watch about it.

Second watch is Syric and Stavis?
Syric will listen out for it and try and determine if they are coming closer.

Durign the second watch the horns are coming closer but if you had to guess they were moving towards the fire and passing you on the south and southwest areas maybe a mile out.

To clarify they may get a mile to your south if they keep on their current path.

Syric will discuss it with Stavis to see if he is concerned by the rate or direction of Drow approach. Assuming there is no cause for concern Syric will prepare camp as best he can for a quick exit.

Stavis will mention he isn't familiar with this colonies call meanings but would guess signaling to the other groups their positioning. So should be safe for now unless they signal finding our trail.

Third shift Stavis and Victae hear the Drow horns pass by as expected to the south. Victae mentions "Whomever started those fires is at war with the Drow. Getting out of this forest is going to be trickier I think than entering it."
At the morning the fire is to the N, NE, E.
Horns are to the W, SW, S, SE.
Weather is clear skies, and the dry air from the fires makes it feel a bit warmer than you'd expect.

Is there any difference in the density of the smoke in any particular direction, possibly signifying less intense fires there?
"We have to get past the fires. We may have to find a good sized creek, river or stream and follow its course, keeping low in it and staying in the water as we pass the fire lines. Of course, it may not work even then. But I'd like to hear other suggestions, if anyone has them."

The smoke is densest on the east and it does seem less intense to the north.

Unless anyone can suggest a better course of action, I say we try to find a waterway that goes north and slog it out to get past the fires. Sucks, but what ya gonna do?

OOC- I misread the directions you gave earlier, Joun, I thought we were totally boxed in.
"No, looks pretty clear. I thought at first the smoke was over there also, but if we can end-run the fires to the north by moving that way, that's all to the good."

The party has a small breakfast and keeps on moving to the NW, deeper into the forest. A heavy day of travel mostly downhill finds yourself at the end of the say with smoke just to the east. The north, northwest and North East seem to be smoke free. In the distance you see the charred remains of eh forest to the NE like it had been burned a week ago. You establish a camp.

Trinal looks at Tony wryly.
"You read my mind, friend. But they'd have to be cooperating with one another to be intentionally steering us that way, so we can hope that it's just the vagaries of chance and avoid any entanglements."
