Of course. Once the host is back up I'll be updating the server and pulling another round of backups, and I'll add him to the whitelist then. Please PM me his minecraft name.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Also, I don't know if it's possible Jimer, but I'm wondering if you can do with Fallingwater what you did with Bul's structures but in reverse. I would like to import a copy of it into a creative mode world.

The host is back up. I'm going to do some housekeeping and update it to a newer version of bukkit, then bring it back online.
And yes, Cusp- I can export it for you. You'll need MCEdit to work with the exported chunks.

If portals start working I'm going to kick myself for coming back from my eastern exploration too early.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I have good news and bad news.
Good news: The server is back up.
Bad news: LapisPortals is failing entirely now, and throwing tons of exceptions. I'm guessing it's because of the UUID changes and how it listens for player events. I'm going to reach out to the developer, but I'm not holding out much hope at the moment. For now I've had to disable the plugin entirely. We'll have to either write our own or convince the author of the one we use to update it to a newer version.
I'll keep you in the loop, and I'm very sorry about this.

If you stand under it and use the /top command it should take you up. I'm very sorry about the inconvenience.Blackferne wrote:So I need to make a ladder to Sky Island?

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Hey no worries. I always thought the teleporters, while cool, kind of encouraged sprawl to a degree. (See my lego castle in the middle of no where).
The /top command is sufficient enough for me.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
So I'm thinking that maybe we should consider our own portaling plugin, that works like LapisPortals, but maybe in a way more likely to be what we want specifically. I'm concerned about how easily it enables sprawl, as mentioned earlier, but I'm not sure what the best way to address that would be. Some ideas I have right off the top of my head:
* A cost to teleport.
* A cost to build a portal.
* Timers on portals (can't use it more than x times in a given period)
Or maybe we just work with something like what we have- if the consensus is that it works for us.
Your thoughts?

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Sprawl is a concern, but ultimately not a huge one.
A bigger issue to look at is that logan has sc locked the front door on your shop.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
we could limit it such that each player only get X number of portals.

I would like a horse, Bul!
Also, I like the portals. The ability to travel rapidly around the map has changed the game for the better for me personally..

Also Jimer, I can give you a hand programming, although my background is business programming and the standard web crap stuff.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Well I'm definitely happier that I built the railway now and worked on that road with Bul. I know I abuse portals a lot (1 portal so I don't have to go up a single flight of stairs, one to my basement, one to the top of my tower, 2 to town, 1 to my ranch, 2 to places far out west only that aren't very far apart, one to every abandoned mine I came across while building my rails, and a number more) but I'd be open to anything.
Spoiler:
Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I am now quickly expanding my rail lines. although I am running out of gold for power rails.
And my mine is a portal away.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
OK, let's talk portals.
1) Assume we're starting from scratch.
2) What features do you want?
3) How should portals be assembled?
4) What's the user story for them? (describe the best way you'd like to see it work in plain terms).
We're not constrained by the way the current plugin works; we could come up with others. I'm interested to hear ideas about what would be fun, immersive and useful.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I'm conflicted. I like the portals we had and I like the infrastructure we had and have been expanding.
If there is any significant change to portals I will probably end up redesigning my house which isn't neccessarily a bad thing.
1)Ok, assumed.
2)Primarily to move from one place to another.
3)I had no issue with the current design, they were compact and used a door.
4)I really can't think of anything different
Sorry, I know this isn't much help. I'm better at tweaking ideas then generating them. I'm not sure what would be more immersive and fun, but the lapis portals were definitely useful. If someone does have ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I guess what I'm wondering is, if we had it to do over again (because we apparently do), would you like to see the door/closet metaphor continue? I could see it being interesting to make portals be a chunk of something rare in the floor- like a gold or emerald block, say- that you stand on and activate via a button. Or a pattern you have to put down in a specific material. I dunno, I'm just spitballing but you get the idea. I'd like to see portals continue to be used but make them more interesting. Right now they're just sort of utilitarian.
