"Well to conflagrate the questions a bit, you guys are not in heaven, hell, the nine planes of Zithor...wait that isn't your world. Let me back up. The gods you worship for example.." He looks at the papers in front of him " Avandra, are real. They do exist and have purpose. When you die your soul goes into the river of souls where it washes up on the afterlife of your destiny. If you are a good follower of Corellon, you'd wash up in the gardens of Traldur. If you were a bad follower of Melora, you'd end up in the plane of Nature's wrath. It is all big and grand in it's scope. Those gods rule over your world, which is one of...wait for it..." He pauses for dramatic effect "...billions of worlds in the realms of mortals. Now you guys were in that river, floating along, but the bureau here got word that the council has you pegged for a special task which is why you are here.

Here, by the way is the Bureau of Ethereal Affairs, Spectral Protocals, and Protoplasmic Investigations. We are commonly known as Bureau 17. Occasionally the gods would intervene in mortal affairs, and that got messy, so they formed a council to oversee the divine directives, that council created the Bureau, and well we act as a first line of divine intervention in a hopes to prevent what is often called 'troubles', 'reckonings', or 'apocalypi'..wait no 'apocalypses'. The council on the direct order of a few of the higher ups asked us to fish you out of the river, and put you through testing and training. But first we have to go over your records."

You are now in the room with everyone else talking to Marty. Back in the waiting room you were not allowed to leave any doors.

Hearing Marty speak about Melora, Syric's mind finally opens itself to acknowledge where he was. He had been locked in some internal soul searching, trying to figure out the mistakes he made that ended in his death. Now, with his eyes opened, he begins to realize his journey wasn't quite through, that this wasn't 'the end', causing a surge of hopefulness to replace the melancholy that he was beginning to drown in.
Spoiler:
Within 5 squares of Syric: +1 to Healing surges, +3 Diplomacy, +2 Intimidate, +2 Speed on surprise and 1st regular rounds
Between 6-10 squares of Syric: +1 Diplomacy

"So what, we're some sort of chosen ones and so even though we colossally blundered and got ourselves killed now we get a do over? So what happens if we die again? And what is this task we've been tabbed for?"

@ Stavis

Marty looking at you says with a smile you rarely see from humans "Completely voluntary. We fished you out of the River of Souls, and if you want to be returned to drift to your eternal resting place, we can make that happen. This whole proposition is voluntary." he turns to Tony, As to why you since you 'blundered' so badly? Well let me read from the official report on the incident. Warning some of the characterizations may be a bit rude, but Agent Pezolis is not one for pulling punches.. ahem

The group doesn't lack for courage. They also have good intentions, though that manifests itself differently in each of them. Ham'mon Aeghs for example is not one to make motives clear to his allies, preferring to simply act. However his heart is dedicated towards the eradication of evil in a fury he has not shown in some time. Others show compassion and a genuine caring by contrast. Among Trinal Katorm's final words were an apology to the soldiers that had fallen, showing guilt for being involved with the death of others.

He goes on for a bit

The real challenge will be their ability to solidify as a team. Early interactions between Syric and Arlen Dorian aka Tony Plush have been tense on repeated occasions including a bout early on which left Dorian bleeding out, and pushed Trinal Katorm to leave the company mid contract. Syric's patience has continually been a problem such as when he ordered a strike on the Barbarian To'rassa during parlay.

And so on and so on ah

Of the cardinal virtues they show a few, lack others. If council wishes to recruit they will require a complete test of virtue

And that is the crux of it. People on the council fear for your home realm, and are actively seeking out divine champions fight for them as part of the bureau. To qualify you will be put through training and testing to show you possess the 7 virtues of a pure soul. If you die during this process back to the river of souls. If you fail to pass the tests, back to the river of souls. "

"And if we pass and we are sent back what then? We are returned to life as these divine champions taking orders from the bureau? So what, we have some sort of open ended contract where in exchange for returning us to life they can order us around to take on any task they see fit for the rest of our lives?

Look, Tony Plush died once, it's an experience he'd prefer to not go through again, but Tony Plush wasn't exactly keen on dieing when he did either. Most of all Tony Plush is keen on having his freedom though. So Tony Plush is going to need more details on how this would work before he's willing to make a choice on the whole floating in the river corpse for the rest of eternity or if it's testing time."

"If you pass the tests, you return to your world and finish what it seems you had started. The gods know that Bha'al is making a move, and they know that Orcus is making a move, and instead of going smashing through they are giving the Bureau a first crack at it. But once you are giving your mortal life back, a chance few get might I add, you return to the world with free will. The gods and bureau would hope given the severity of the actors in play, you'd take this second chance and the training you receive as tools to smite evil. However if you get back to the world and decide to retire to a farm to raise sheep will you are old and grey, that is fine too. The choice is yours."

To clarify though, not that I'm planning on doing it, although part of me wants to play the Halfling warlord just so people can call him Tiny, but FIERCE, what penalties, if any, would there be involved.

The normal penalties for being small would apply. Ie smaller weapons shorter movements.

"Three things before I can agree to this, though it may be a bit of a moot point for me."

"First, what of the men who where with us at the fort? Am I to presume that they are not being given this offer as well?"

"Secondly, how will our miraculous survival be explained? I can't image the Earl that sent us to defend the fort will be none too pleased with those that pass the tests, especially should all of us pass, and given a second chance. I doubt he would take our word of how we "survived" such overwhelming odds without coming to the conclusion that we abandoned the men at the fort to save our own skins."

"Finaly, For those that go back will there be any assistance on confronting the Bha’alists and Orcus. I would point out that prior to us heading to the fort we had little to go on for where next to hit either of them where it would hurt or even slow them down."

I intend to, I just spent the last few days thinking about what to do next so a part of me was excited to try out a new class, it's my alt-itis kicking in I think. But rest assured Tony will remain, he's got valuable skills for one. And for two, he's Tony fucking Plush.

edit: Also my weekday posting is going to be kinda limited for the next week, they made me a trainer at work and we have a new class starting today so I'll be spending most of my days in the training room making nubs want to cry and question the choices they made that led them to this point in their lives.

Marty looks at Stavis and says "The men at the fort's fate is not known to me. The council chose you guys, I don't why beyond their belief you are capable of something greater. As to the logistics of your reintroduction, that hasn't been worked out in full. Typically though we provide training and equipment befitting their appointed tasks. To put it bluntly, before you walk on your world again, you'll be given new shiny weapons and armor."
