"That is concerning for sure. Okay let's turn our attention to the third party. What do we know of these barbarians? Allow me to answer for you. They are blood drinkers and worship Orcus in increasing numbers. They have recently bannered under a single chieftan. They are expert horsemen who have skills with a bow while at full gallop that seems unnatural. But of more immediate concern I have reports that there is a scouting party headed this way. I have some soldiers dispatched to intercept, but if our initial reports are insufficient, they could use backup."

He pauses.

"But I would be turning a blind eye to other threats if I stopped you from proceeding to Sagemoor to continue your investigations as well. Perhaps some might lend assistance to the soldiers at the fort, and others could take the investigation to Sagemoor? I think you'll find several temples of gods such as Moradin who can guide you on the relic's destruction."

[ooc DM moment: What he is proposing is either 1) you all go help the fort defend against the barbarian scouting party or 2) you split half go to fort half got to sagemoor.

You should realize Sagemoor is a few hundred miles south so any party split would be not permanent, but definitely for a long while.]

[ooc]Tony can easily find use for his skills and be useful in either situation. His intial inclination will be to go help with the barbarians though because that's the immediate, obvious threat[/ooc]

"Hearing of the scooting party is troubling, without a strong enough response would easily lead to a full out war in the area."

Stavis will then look over the whole group seeing others in agreement to helping with the barbarians. "This scouting party is certainly something at the very least some of the group will help with, myself being one of them. Though I don't wish to sound calluse to the issue but would bring up pay. I don't mean that as a threat to our helping but merely mention to ensure an agreement is made and not have issues arise later from miscommunication and misunderstanding."

"For a successful defense of the fort should the scouting party attack I will pay a sum of 300gp per defender." The Earl says.

Stavis will nod in agreement "Would you want the group going to potentially do more then just defend the fort, should the barbarians not attack the fort but are still in the area would you want us to bring the fight to them?"

"I don't think so, as there is a difference between defense and provoking a wider conflict. But I will leave that to those who defend as they will be the boots on the ground." the Earl says.

I hear my tune playing. I will be answering the call of the defenders with a small musical number. The performance should kill them.

Syric stands, drawing his sword "It seems threats are coming from all sides, we've faced the cult and we've faced the alliance, it's only fitting we assess the strength of the barbarians next. I, for one, want to prove my might against these demon worshippers and show Kord I am worthy" said while looking at his lightning etched blade, before sitting back in his seat, sword still in hand.
Spoiler:
Within 5 squares of Syric: +1 to Healing surges, +3 Diplomacy, +2 Intimidate, +2 Speed on surprise and 1st regular rounds
Between 6-10 squares of Syric: +1 Diplomacy

[ooc] 3 days by horse would be 150 miles according to the PHB, is that really what you were going for? 3 days by cart/wagon is 75 miles.

Horses are about as fast as walking when you get beyond a certain distance. I say we just hike.

[ooc- a horse typically walks about 4 MPH. So to go fifty miles a day would take about 12 hours of walking, which would be very bad for the horses and us. They can't trot or run/canter/gallop for that long, so unless we're talking about using a post system with fresh horses, we're not going to make it in 3 days. ]

Edit: The PHB is insane. No horse could do that. But that's the rules, so...

Seriously though I am kind of on a fuzz reality thing. I know that humans can outpace horses at long distances.

But in game terms the story seems better if you are swiftly riding horses to the rescue of Ft WeGonnaDie or wherever. When a choice goes between reality vs cool story mechanics, we fall on the side of story.

the PHB just bases it all on 'speed' and a riding horse has speed of 10 and a cart and I have a speed of 5 where most of you have 6 or 7. Speed 10 = 5mph and speed 5 = 2.5mph.

i don't care how we do it, i was just trying to get an understanding of it. We took carts to Heppils and made it in a day and I think that was 50 miles?

edit: so sagemoor is a few hundred miles away, is that in the opposite direction from the barbarians?

"I think it's clear our calling will take us even further away from Belholt, I think we are past the point of trying to accomplish things on foot. I have no problem with getting a horse for this task. Is there anywhere in town we could find some? I still have my payment from Burgo."

"Tony Plush accepts your terms, 225g payment plus a horse is more than fair and reasonable. Personally Tony Plush can be ready to leave within the hour your lordship, and if the situation is as dire as you fear we likely do not have much time to lose. Unless you have further questions for us then Tony Plush is going to make his preparations for departure and will return here shortly."

I'm assuming the meeting is breaking up at this point, hence me excusing myself. My preparations to leave basically involve me going back to The Mighty Elk, get my pack, swing by the store to buy a few extra items for the trip then back for us to move out.

Tony Plush's shopping list:
Tent
Crossbow
Crossbow bolts (20) x2
Everburning Torch
Trail rations (10 days)
Silk rope (50')
total cost if it's all available per PHB: 102 gold

Also as an aside, have I mentioned how irritating I find it that you can't use sneak attack with a shortbow or longbow?
