You open the barrels and see a black sand like substance that smells of sulfur, chalk, and burnt paper.
Make a dungoneering check DC 18 to identify the substance further.

You identify this substance as gunpowder. Though it is pretty rare to see, and generally only used for cannons at this point.

"hmm... what is this doing so far from a keep." Stavis checks the walls to see if there is any signs that the raw materials could be found here.

None of the materials you believe are necessary for the construction of gunpowder are in this mine shaft.

So apparently it's CANNON for there to be gunpowder in Joun's world.

Stavis will then head back to Syric "Its gunpowder so if the others haven't found a way to disable the furnace permanently, some of that will do the trick. If you don't mind keeping watch I'll go and tell the others what we've found and bring Tony or Ham'mon to help further investigate the middle path."

"That's great, I've been fruitlessly trying to think of a way to destroy that thing, this should come in handy. I'll be happy to stay here and make sure nothing slips by" Syric says as he draws his sword and searches the darkness again.

Ham'mon comes out of his revery, takes a sunrod out of his pack, and heads into the mineshaft.

If Ham'mon reaches Syric before Stavis rejoins he will point out the branch tunnels and describe which barrels were found where.
"We haven't gone any further down the main shaft, I had wanted to wait for a third person before proceeding"

Ham'mon is now on the map:
https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1RDT ... sp=sharing
As you walk in you see Syric and Starel talking about 40 feet in front of you and there seems to be a split in the mineshaft going in three different tunnels.

Stavis will head out the mine to inform the others of whats been found as he passes Ham'mon "Just the man I was about to go find Syric and I have investigated the side passages but we're wanting more help before going much deeper. If you follow the path straight down you'll meet up with Syric and he can fill you in on what we found while I tell the others and will be back as soon as I've done that."
Stavis will then head out and find both Gobo and Tony.

Ham'mon will walk to Syric, stop, and sniff the air, trying to determine where the sulfur smell is coming from.

Stavis after flagging down both Gobo and Tony "So of what Syric and I have looked over this is three barrels of gunpowder that could be used to destroy the furnace should that still need to be done. I would suggest we hold of using it until we are ready to leave as I would prefer to not be too close when we set any off."

Just barrels. You'd need to either open the hole at the top and carefully pour (or make a straw) or perhaps buy a spigot for the future.

[OOC or possibly open a big hole from the top and ladle out with the mug you would be drinking from.]
