Droid Incredible vs Droid X - FIGHT!!

Post by Furiel » Thu Jul 15, 2010 12:22 am

So the Motorola X just came out, the Incredible is back in stores now that it's off backorder afaik, so I'm now back to looking into upgrading to a Droid...so all you droid-o-philes out there, and I know we have a few, which one would you suggest and why.

Notes: Wi-Fi tethering is something I'm interested in doing, but having to root my phone is not intimidating nor am I anti doing so. I'm already with Verizon so I would not have to change carriers. My cell phone is the only phone I own as I got rid of my land line a year ago.

Well... if you're looking to root...this is probably an important piece of info:

Just be like Kit and get one made out of cheese, that way when you're hungry you don't decide to eat it.

You have to hold the X to get a real idea. I have a Nexus One so its very similar to the Incredible. Great phone, but I found the Incredible to be "cheap feeling".

The X is likely to be better for Media consumption.

Reese, out.

My Incredible is my baby. I sleep with it. Bathe with it. Have se... wait. Um... I love it.

However, the Droid X does slightly have an edge over it spec and feature wise. It just depends on what you're looking for. If you want a sleek phone with a nice UI get the Incredible (Which after an OS Upgrade, it will be pretty comparable to the X honestly.) but if you want a bigger screen, and all the newest and latest get the X.

Or....

Wait a few months for the dual core CPU Droids to come out. Your call, don't think you can make a mistake. And with Verizon if you get one and don't like it, you can take it back within 30 days and get the other for a 35 dollar restocking fee.

That is a good piece of info. Realistically though the only major thing that I was interested in that required root is the wifi tether, and the X has a built in app that does it whereas the incredible does not so it would need to be rooted to gain that functionality.

And yeah, I definately need to hit a verizon store and get them both in-hand to get a feel for them before a final decision is made.

My understanding is that if you root the inc you can tether for free. With the x using it as a WiFi hotspot to tether to you pay an extra 20 bucks a month. Also get in a contract soon, I was at a VZW store the other day talking to an employee about ATTs new cap on their data plans and he said VZW is probably going to do the same.

Visit these forums for all the Android info you could ever want. Learn detailed specs about each phone and what is involved with rooting so you might better know what you want.

That was one of the things I was wondering about...root to wifi hotspot means it shows all the data activity as the phones, so your unlimited phone data plan (assuming that is what you got) works for your PC data through the phone. I was concerned about the X having an additional charge like that for the built in tether.

And ATT's cap going to verizon is exactly the reason that I'm looking at doing this now instead of holding off until something goes wrong with my current phone or I'm due for a new one, which isn't for another 9 months or so.

I've been reading about how when you try to mod the x it will self destruct just as it says in that article Veela posted. If you don't want to root then that's fine. But consider in about a year when android OS 3.0 or higher is out, it likely won't be supported on current phone models and so you'll lose software support from VZW and Motorola. If you could root you could at least download third party software updates.

I haven't rooted my inc yet but after reading about the MOTO x and what people are saying about rooting I plan to do so after froyo is out and there is a Rom to root with. Anyways this just more to consider. But go to the store and play with them and see how you feel.

Also keep in mind that Droid x comes with froyo, but the inc does not. After froyo the inc will have many of the features and speed of the x.

Ok so for the Wifi Tether, that is built into Froyo 2.2. There will be no need to root to gain that UNLESS Verizon disables it in upcoming builds.

Droid X does win on specs but you need to love the size of the phone. I like it because it is not as large as a tablet, but larger than the small screens today. Meaning it is easier to type on and can handle better visuals.

The Incredible is a great phone. As I said before, the plasticy feel to me was off putting but only compared to my N1.

Verizon is likely to adopt the same data caps as ATT. Just lock in your current plans now so that you dont have that issue. Wifi Tether may also become something they charge for. Any android phone that has the carriers pushing the updates (read anything but the N1) can have the Tether turned off or charged for.

Ultimately, with both phones you get the great side of Android. Specs capable of handling all the current bells and whistles of 2.2 and likely up to and beyond 3.0.

Edit: After reviewing some of the Forums on the Droid X the main differences seem to be

Incredible: Faster / Snappier experience and Sense UI
Droid X: Easier to use / type on and Significantly better battery life

Furiel, really it's going to come down to which custom UI you prefer: HTC's Sense or MOTOBLUR. Seriously, they are that different.

I wouldn't trade Sense for anything but stock 2.2 -- but you might prefer BLUR over it...

Reese is right that 2.2 Froyo is going to make the Incredible able to be a wifi hotspot... But you'll have to pay the 20 bucks a month for it. If you Root, you can get it for free unless they manage to find a way to stop it.

Anyone that wants to give me their old T-Mobile/ATT phone I'll gladly accept it and name my never-happening first-born after you. My ancient-as-hell RAZR has entered the random reboot stage :(

I'm not down with paying 20 bucks for something I'm only going to be using for a few hours once a month or so. Mostly I want that ability to be able to bring my laptop to work when I have to work my rotating saturday and have internet access on it outside of the company confines. I've lived without it for almost 9 years now so I could if I had to...but if I don't... :emperor:

Well there is PDANet that is free and does not require Root. That works as a tethered internet. And yes rooting (Incredible only) will give you Wifi Tether for free.

I have never used my wifi tether but did heavily use PDANet on my last business trip to avoid paying the hotel for the webs.

If you're still interested in the Incredible check out your local Frys. The price might be right.

I stopped in a verizon store on thursday and I liked the feel of the X more in-hand so I'm leaning that way right now...that and the nearest Fry's is like 3 hours away so that's not real practical for me.

I still haven't played with an X yet. Kristen has an she says it's really nice but too big for her. I think if I were still in my first 30 days I'd exchange it even though you can't Root the X.

Either way I don't think you can go wrong.
