Dodd's Weekend Movie Review - 04/11

Post by Dodd Formeianna » Mon Apr 11, 2011 6:03 pm

I went to see a double feature at the drive-in this weekend. Went to see Paul, and Your Highness. Paul was awesome! Definitely recommend it. Lots of SW references and nerd jokes, something I definitely appreciate since I consider myself a bit of a connaiseur in both categories.

Your Highness. Wow. Where to begin? As a lover of all things fantasy, and as someone with relatively low standards when it comes to movies and humor in general, even I had to bow my head in shame and disbelief. The part where he castrated the dead Minotaur and wore his shlong on a trophy necklace for the rest of the movie was especially disturbing.

I give it a .5 out of 5 star rating, due to Natalie Portman wearing a thong for a single scene. Otherwise the score would fall in the negatives, somewhere out of sheer lameness. That's 1 hour 40 minutes of my life I'll never recover.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Your Highness looks AWFUL. Might have to check out Paul.

I liked Paul. Paul +Hot Fuzz +Shaun of the Dead have me seriously considering making the statement "Nick Frost and Simon Pegg always entertain, it won't always be A+ awesome, but it will be enjoyable"

I considered seeing it this last weekend merely because I had heard about Natalie Portman in an thong thing...I'm now glad I didn't see it

I'm going to see Your Highness. It strikes me as a uniquely Alvian movie. Crass, terrible and unapologetic.

I've heard some people enjoyed it. You might, as well.

James Franco + Fake British Accent = Funny. But mainly for the wrong reasons.

The real winner is Danny Mcbride. He wrote the script, created this role for himself, and basically dictated in the script that he should make out with Natalie Portman in the end. Winning.

And not in the Charlie Sheen sorta way either...

I couldn't agree more.

Which is disturbing, as I don't generally agree with you on principle. Its not that I disagree, it's just that I can't pick your side of things.

Paul was great, went two weeks ago with two other friends, but we were the only ones in the theater. Hopefully more people will watch that on DVD/Blu ray.

To be fair that is Oklahoma and I think the perception it is making fun of religious fundamentalists probably dampens the theater going there. When Jess and I saw it the theater was like half full. But that was the lunchtime show on a sunday a few weeks back.

Yeah, saw it on a Wednesday Night, which is also church night. Norman is a college town, but even Superhero movies on the first night are not even sold out anymore. They also built a huge theater a few miles north of Norman, and it has balcony's for 18 and up, and they server dinners, so maybe they are all going to that one. I am lazy and refuse to drive 5 extra miles.
