Wednesday may actually be better for me too...and TF2 is fine. I don't really care about the balance factor per se. Just logging on to do some pew pew is cool enough.

Re: Church Picnic 10/20 (Thursday)
Last week, as an engineer I kept hammering my turrets with the damn wrench...and nothing seemed to happen. It wouldn't complete the building process. Not sure if I'm doing it properly.
Re: Church Picnic 10/20 (Thursday)
My Wednesday nights have cleared up as a couple of the girls on my volleyball team came down with a case of "I don't want to have to drive to volleyball in the snow-itis" so I won't be playing vball for the rest of the year.
So I guess I should probably go download TF2 tonight and maybe play a few maps since I've never played it before so I get an idea how it works.

Re: Church Picnic 10/20 (Thursday)
How to play engineer:
You have guns (shotgun and a pistol) a wrench, a builder, and a destruct button.
When you have the wrench out it has scraps of metal (think ammo for building stuff). It takes 200 to upgrade anything to the next level. all stuff caps out at level 3*. (There is an exception but you need a special engineer glove and I'm not gonna get into that here).
Sentries cost 130 to build level 1
Dispensers cost 100 to build level 1
Teleporters cost 125 to build level 1 (entrance or exit)
When you are hovering over the item with your wrench it should tell you what level it is and how far it is towards the next level example it might read level 1 25/200 on a sentry gun.
To upgrade you will need to always be getting more scrap metal. This is done by picking up ammo packs or standing next to a dispenser.
Common quick build strategy:
Run to the spot you intend to defend (let's say the intelligence room in a CTF game). You start with 200 scrap so you build a dispenser (now you are down to 100 scrap) go find an ammo pack, come back to your dispenser (which will be building itself). Build the sentry. As the dispenser spits out scrap you auto pick it up. (+40 for a level 1 dispenser) and you keep hammering your sentry until it upgrades all the way. Then turn and upgrade your dispenser. After both are built you stand guard.
Upgrading Teleporters: while teleporters take a lot of scrap to get down ( 250 for entrance AND exit) you only have to upgrade one side to level 3 for both to be upgraded.
Moving your stuff. If you have something you want to move click the right mouse button to pick it up to move it. It will rebuild itself to whatever level it was when you moved it.
Tip: build a level three sentry slightly out of the way, then move it to the hot spot of combat.
Speed up deployment: There is a set amount of time from when you click the blueprint to drop til it is a functional item. You can speed that up by hitting it with your wrench. This will not cost you scrap. I don't think you can speed up the rebuild time when you move an item though.
SPIES: Everyone near your stuff is a spy. Shoot them all the time. Seriously you see someone walk in shoot them. If they are on your team no harm no foul. If they are not on your team they will take damage and you can get your sentries to finish them out.
Beware Demomen and Pyros. They have the ability to really mess with you. Scouts are dumb and think they can outrun rockets. They cannot.
Set up in nooks and crannies. Your sentries have a shorter range than most human players. It is possible for a good player to stay out of sentry range and slowly shoot them to pieces. Soldiers rocket launchers are particularly good at this.
Help your other engineers. If you are in the same room as another engineer don't set up too close to each other (demos will eat you alive) spread out a little, but help them upgrade their gear and they should help you upgrade yours. If one of you dies watch out for their stuff. Periodically shoot them to make sure a spy didn't slip in.

Re: Church Picnic 10/20 (Thursday)
How to play medic:
Find a heavy, soldier, pyro, or demoman
Heal them. Use line of sight to stay "safe". Always let them round the corner first and blow sutff up before you follow.
Periodically check behind you because pyros, spies, and scounts are great flankers.
When you get your charge up to 100% you use your right mouse button to use it and you and your heal target are invulnerable for a bit. Save this for charges to clear a sentry nest, capture a point, or break their defense.
Don't get tunnel vision on your main heal guy. If you can top off everyone else in your immediate area, but always keep your main healing target close.
Some people are good at the offensive medic. I am not one of them.

Re: Church Picnic 10/20 (Thursday)
how to play pyro...
Pyro's are a suicide class. You job is to rush into a clump of enemies and set them on fire. People freak out when they are on fire and run away. It is a great way to stop an assault single handed.
Pyro's stop objectives from changing hands. Your right mouse button shoots out a puff of air. This will push back other players off objectives, away from medics and occasionally off a cliff
Pyro's shoot rockets. Well, not exactly. If a soldier shoots a rocket at you, shoot your air blast and it will reflect his rocket back at him. This also works for grenades and sticky bombs.
Pyro's kill spies. Flame everyone you see. most of them are spies

How to play the soldier...
shoot your rocket at the other guy's feet.
that is all.

Re: Church Picnic 10/20 (Thursday)
The trick is anticipating where their feet will be. I've been moderately successful with the Soldier and the Heavy. The support classes give me trouble because of my tendency to want to get into the thick of the fight. I basically play how I played Halo (constant movement, lots of jumping, the occasional corner ambush...), except in TF2 you don't aim for the head.Bulwark wrote:How to play the soldier...

Addition to pyro: If possible always be moving. You do more damage typically if you can set people on fire from behind. As a flanking class you are awesome.
Something I've found out on 2fort: Pyros make a good flag defender. There is a corner in the room people can't see until they get there. Stand in that corner person runs to the flag you run up behind them and chase them with fire. Intel protected, you are a hero.

I'll pass. I don't think that asking to spend one night of the three that I'll have been home out of the past fourteen days playing a video game will earn me any "Likely To Ever Get Laid Again" points with the lady.
