A couple months ago I was trying to watch some show with the wife and play minecraft at the same time. I was taking a rail a long distance so I thought I could multitask...

I fell asleep

And predictably woke up dead and thinking it had been too long to reclaim my stuff I rage-quit and hadn't been back since. I logged in today and found myself at the spawn point. Once I re-equipped I headed back out east on the rail...only to find after the 10-15 minute trip that my items were still sitting on the rail where I died months ago.

I felt pretty dumb.

they only despawn if that chunk is active. It sounds like no one else has taken that rail since you died.

Yeah, that trip is a time sink.

so, I went through a netherportal and my minecraft client crashed. When I reconnected I was in the middle of nowhere in the nether. I tried to get back but promptly fell into a lake of lava with all my gear
If I disconnected before I died, is there any way to get rescued?

It looks like you disconnected at 23:36, and at 00:05 the server did its daily backup.

I don't think there's any way to rescue you, but I could restore a backup from yesterday, but that'd mean falling back 24 hours.

Alternatively you could get me a list of what you lost and I'll respawn it for you.

Don't do a rollback. The only things difficult to replace were the tools. diamond pickaxe and shovel with unbreaking 3, Efficiency 4 and silk touch.
I also had a stack of 64 flint; it's not difficult to get, just time consuming

If you make a trip to the village. All that stuff is for sale and more. If you need books and gems there are stacks in the basement.

A bad day in Minecraft.

So I was in the nether at my Gold farm and just finished a around waiting for more pigmen to re-spawn.

I step outside to shot a ghast and get jumped by 5 pigmen and a baby pigmen.

I run all the way back and pick up my stuff. All the pigmen have despawned except the baby. I notice the baby is wearing a shiny new diamond breastplate. (and I am missing mine). In annoyance I take a swing a the baby and because I forgot to dawn the rest of my armor the baby makes quick work of me.

I run all the way back to pick up my stuff and notice that the baby is now wearing a shiny new diamond helm, paints and boots. And has a shiny new diamond sword. grrrrr.

I look at my inventory see it mostly empty, close my inventory and Baby pigmen has despawned.
