Mesa de Venganza!

It Looks Like You're Building a City. Would you like some help?

The city is springing forth from the forests on the verge of the desert. Mesa de Venganza reborn. It's at about X150 -Y150, not far from spawn.

The walls are largely complete but as we expand them and build more infrastructure, we'll need more materials. I've built a temporary cobblestone building in the southwest corner of the city which has chests for everything from various types of stone to wood and redstone components. If you have extra stuff to donate to building the city, please drop it off there.

City Walls

The city walls are very simple- 3 blocks of Polished Andesite, 3 blocks of Polished Granite, alternating, with a cobblestone wall on top. Keeps out everything except the occasional spider and we're working on extending things so they're less of an issue. Torches go on the wall at each middle Andesite block on top of the cobblestone.

Roads

Roads are a work in progress, but they're 3 wide Polished Diorite with a one-block shoulder of gravel. Changes in elevation should use 3 stone brick stairs.

Streetlights

I'm building streetlights as I have time and resources. They go ten blocks apart (actually 11) on alternating sides of the road. They're ten high and have four redstone lamps powered by a daylight sensor. To make them I need lots of glowstone, so if you get to the nether, gather it up!

If the wall had an over hang of on block out will keep spiders out. I think steps would work for aesthetics but its been a while since I've used anything other then fencing.

I prefer digging a trench on the outside of the wall and put netherrack in it and lighting it on fire.

I don't know about netherrack and fire- the sound is annoying. What about a covered lava trench instead? Or if the fire trench was far enough out (and maybe covered during the day?) it would be fine. I just get tired of that constant crackle sound.

Oh, I forgot to mention!

City Gates!

The gates are automatic. There's one in the south and west walls near the SW corner, more will be added as time permits. They open at dawn and close at dusk, and you can override them with a button push to get in and out after dark.

Keep in mind that skeletons can shoot through the gates if you're right next to them. We're working on extending the light out so we shouldn't have many mobs spawning near enough to find you interesting, but just keep it in mind.

I'll look into good anti-spider solutions tonight. On the mesa sides of the city, it shouldn't be too hard. ON the birch forest we will have more trouble as the spiders can walk from treetop to treetop to get into the city. We may need to cut a firebreak in there.

Also, lava and fire traps could spread to the forest and burn the whole thing down :(

I believe a wall with an overhang is enough to stop them. so if we top the existing wall with upside down stairs or a slab it should keep spiders out. That doesn't solve tree overhang issues, but that could be dealt with an aggressive lumberjack campaign.

However if we want to get very sophisticated we could make the wall a series of water falls that are nighttime activated creating sheets of water for walls.

upside down stairs on top of the walls are not aesthetically pleasing.

If they are the underside to a catwalk along the wall they can be. Make like a proper fortified wall of sorts.

Spiders are annoying more than anything and I've seen maybe 2 since we put up the walls. They're not even aggressive during the day. I'm not sure we need to overdo the defenses just to manage them.

Also they have string which is useful.

I agree. I have been shooting at the spiders to get them over the wall for easy kills.
