Sorry for the issue, the server's back up now.

If and when it becomes necessary, PayPal is probably best. But I want us all to have input on it. Right now we're doing OK.

Blackie's UFO may have gotten an upgrade (assuming the redstone oscillator doesn't get stuck again). Best viewed at night.
Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Interesting read on why redstone and falling lava cause server lag.

I had to rework a couple of things this week because of this.

That post is about the Xbox edition of Minecraft. Does it apply to normal MC as well?

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
It used to have more impact on the pc side but I want to say both 1.6 and 1.7 did some reworking on how flow is calculated and rendered so the impact is alot less then it used to and since xbox gets updated slower they still have those issues precent. The redstone circuit can still have an impact if its complicated enough, so if you can simply its better to still do so, but even that still has a smaller impact on the pc then xbox side of things.
So if your wanting a clock its usually better to use rail with a track sensor then a redstone circut clock.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
the problem I was running into was not the redstone circuit itself, it was the lighting updates. I put redstone torches around the UFO and was having them blink on and off individually (like chaser lights). Each of the 12 lights was causing lighting updates to propagate all the way to the ground and was causing massive lag anywhere near it. I cut back to 3 lights blinking simultaneously, but it was still causing some lag.
I think the takeaway is the blinking lights on a server is a bad thing.

Maybe use redstone lamps and a lower frequency of oscillation.

I'll try a series of repeaters tonight and see if that helps.Jimer Lins wrote:Maybe use redstone lamps and a lower frequency of oscillation.

First beacon up!
I've set up the first of four eventual beacons at the tower. You should be able to see it from a distance, especially at night, coming out the top of the tower.
This one provides buffs to movement speed and regeneration as long as you're within 50 blocks of the tower.

Server Lag?
Last night I started getting REALLY bad lag in all areas, but the console wasn't showing any messages. It usually says "Can't keep up" when there's lag due to in-game things. I didn't see the same problem this morning, so maybe it passed.
What I'm thinking is that since our system is a VPS, it's on shared hosting with other servers, which may not have been playing nicely, or may have been being attacked/DDOS'd. I'll keep an eye on it.

MINECRAFT 1.7.5!
OK, folks. Today, just a bit ago, the Bukkit team announced a DEVELOPMENT build that provides Minecraft 1.7.5 compatibility. As an interim release, this is mostly going to be bugfixes and such, the bulk of which are actually in 1.7.4. However, the server has been on 1.7.2 for some time now.
Unless there's objections, I plan to take the server down sometime this evening, take a full offsite backup, and update the server with the latest 1.7.5 build from Bukkit.
This is a totally unsupported build, but hopefully there's no problems with it, but if we find any we can report them to Bukkit and get them fixed. If there's gamebreaking issues we can always roll back to 1.7.2 and wait for a better release.
Let me know your thoughts!

Server updated to Bukkit 1.7.5
I've updated the server to the 1.7.5 branch of Bukkit. Because this is a development version, there will probably be more frequent server updates over the next few weeks as I move ahead to keep up with patches. If you run into problems with anything, let me know.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Does this change the possible biomes at all? I wasn't thinking about which patch they added the last ones and I was looking for Mesa but now realize that they may not have been available.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
It does not. Mesa biomes can be found on our server, but they simply haven't yet. Because this world was created with LARGEBIOMES set to true, the biomes spawned by default are fairly sizable.
When updating to 1.7, I used MCEdit to prune the world around the spawn area and deleted a multitude of chunks to take advantage of the new terrain generation. I hope to find a mesa or Bryce biome sometime.

Yeah, I went exploring yesterday, and after spending an hour and a half in the desert, I finally found a jungle.
