It is very funny. Stay through the end credits. I still can't believe people leave when the credits start. The end credit scene might confuse some people.

Tomorrow I'm taking Zoe and Jess to see it at Flix Brewhouse. We are all very excited.

It was fucking great. Just great. All of it. Fucking great.

Awesome. Highly recommend. Casting was brilliant. Bonus scene was funny.

So yeah,

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Laughed off enough calories to make me hungry for dinner afterwards.

Character dynamics were right on point, and well assembled.

The end-credit scene was too short though, IMO.

I laughed so hard I couldn't stop. It confused the hell out of my son that I found it so entertaining.

Oh, and people are already calling GOTG this generation's "Star Wars", which I think might have some merit- not as a game-changer in terms of moviemaking, but as cultural touchstone.

I think it is this generations star wars in the sense it made space seem fun. A real problem with cinematic sci-fi in the past 20 years has been everything has a dark gritty feel. This is the swashbuckling space I've been wanting for a while.

Very much that. I've had enough brooding dark shots in alleys with rain dripping on capes to last a lifetime.

I've got this theory that one of the reasons Doctor Who is doing so well since the reboot in Eccleston is that it is a sci-fi show that has optimism at it's core. People saw Aliens, the Matrix, and the Dark Knight trilogy and it became a race to the dark side of things. It abandoned an optimistic and fun side of storytelling. That is a reason this movie seems to be clicking as well as it is. We are on the reverse swing of the pendulum.

I tend to agree; I just wonder why Sam Raimi couldn't have guided that with the Spider-Man movies, instead of making them into piles of angsty dreck.

I think one of the best parts about GOTG is that it's silly and KNOWS it's silly in a lot of ways, and just embraces it- without taking it into camp. Playing it straight using a raccoon riding a walking tree firing a machinegun. Hells yes.

I think a prime example of the brooding problem is showcased in Man of Steel. I want to say that I like that movie, but I don't need it too be a continuation of Nolan's Batman. Superman needs to have some fun, and until he talks to the general about the drones and is Clark Kent cub reporter smiling as he adjusts his tie in the elevator, I didn't get the sense he was positive on the whole. I'm fine with Batman being broody. Too many Frank Miller acolytes to deny him that. But there needs to be a positive side to it as well, and I hope that DC realizes that. Justice League doesn't need to be GotG funny (because that wouldn't be true to the source material), but you need to have some humor in it.

JLA could be funny in some parts. They can't go quite as far as GOTG did, but there is some humor to be mined in the annals of JLA history.

And yeah, Man of Steel was a disappointment; Superman doesn't tear up cities like that. The whole thing just felt way wrong and out of sync.

In defense of MoS on the tearing up of metropolis, Zod has all the same powers, and formal military training while Kal-El is still figuring shit out. Against a less powerful opponent I would think he would have stopped as much destruction against an equal or superior opponent I think it would be hard to contain as well. Also he had to deactivate the world engine on the other side of the planet first, so a lot of the destruction was there before he even got to Metropolis.

If nothing else Metropolis taking such a big hit, gives Lex an EXTREMELY easy lead in on why he hate supes.

Also for the first time in forever I think I'm actually going to buy the soundtrack to a movie, I think that was actually one of the best parts of the film.

You're correct about the angst thing, but it could have been toned down a little. It was like HDR angst.

And not only will I be going to see the film again, I'll be getting the soundtrack because hell yes.

Loved MoS, Can't wait to see GotG...

Seems like Fynn (the literal construct) would get along VERY well with the rag-tag GotG folks, per post-review buzz. I LOVE the swashbuckling sci-fi hybrid and this seems SO up my ally. Can't wait to check it out!

On a side note, I don't think I'll be going to another non-animated 3D movie again. The 3D always seems so flat and layered and doesn't really add anything to the movie experience except an additional $7 a ticket.
GotG, on the other hand was pretty good. I don't see it spawning a media empire like Star Wars did, but it wasn't a bad flick.

Guardians can't really spawn a media empire, because it's one of those weird little properties of an existing media empire.

But what it CAN do, and I think will, is open the door to some really, really REALLY good movies set in the Marvel Cosmic Universe. There's so much more to the Marvel universe than Iron Man and Thor. Some of the stories are truly mind-boggling, and this has a chance to blow the doors open to a whole new set of great stories that no one would have taken a chance on before.

Guardians made me want to make Disney give Marvel Studios a blank check to buy back the rights to Deadpool and then go make that movie. Same director/producer/etc. Go make that self-aware, hilarious, and murderous movie. Do it now.
