"Focail" he says. A blue shimmer appears in the room and then little light "flakes" fall to the floor.

Does it seem that the ward is disabled?

"I think that cleared the ward. Tony, I would imagine that the next step is yours?"

Stavis will examine the dials, the way they are configured on the door, how many numbers per dial or on each dial. He will also try and think of anything from the cities history that could have been used as the combination, such as the date of a historic battle, birth, crowning, or death of a prominent king, founding date of the city.

Each knob can be set to one of 40 numbers. There are nine of them so dates would be too short or too long (assuming you put two together). Significant numbers to dwarves typically are prime numbers and multiples of 4.

Stavis will inidcate to the others close to the vault door to back up a bit before trying the prime numbers, being careful to watch for any changes to suggest a trap as been set. First set he will try is 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23. Should that fail will remove the lowest number keeping the numbers from lowest to highest while adding 29 and 31 in turn.

3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29

Acrobatic if necessary to try and dodge any trap set off.

Trinal glances through the journal we found again. Anything helpful regarding the combination there?

Stavis tries combination of primes and nothing happens. He tries another set. Nothing. This goes on for a while.

Nope. There is no indication they knew about teh magical ward and turned to gunpowder out of frustration on the knobs not turning.

"Hm. Nine knobs with forty numbers each is quite a large number of possible combinations."

OOC: It's 1.47 times ten to the 38th power.

"Stavis, can you detect any sounds or feel any differences when manipulating the knobs? Maybe we can crack it that way."

Trinal turns to Zelvo. "Would either of your companions possibly know the combination?"

"I can certainly try" Stavis will try numbers divisible by 4. 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36. On the first dial will cycle through the entire dial twice before settling on 4 unless he hears a click to suggest that is the number. Should he get through the first cycle while try his small cup from his pack to see if they helps enhance the sounds. If he does hear the sound will give up on the divisibles and try cracking by sound.

Perception for listening on cracking the first dial

Let's do a thievery check instead. The skills needed are a very particular form of perception and dexterity.

Stavis puts his ear next to each knob as he slowly turns each knob. Click. He moves his ear turns, click. repeats and ends up with 9/9 the door wavers slightly indicating the lock has been solved.

"Well done, Stavis. Very nicely done."

Trinal steps up to the door. One more check for traps before yanking it open, I think.

Stavis will breath a slight sigh of relief once all are in place and the door shows it is not unlocked, stepping back when Trinal goes to open the door.

Stavis will look to Zelvo indicating if he wishes to enter "I feel it should be either yourself good sir or someone of your choosing that gets the three rubies we need." with his manor-isms will exclude himself when mentioning to Zelvo on picking someone else, potentially lingering when indicating Trinal though difficult to tell if that was intentional.

[OOC Stavis feel really bad about steeling Tony's thunder, that this can't possibly be the last time that something will need to be unlocked and clearly the vault was not up to needing a man of Tony's standards.

Also Staris promises to make up for it with PoE tonight.]
