For those who don't keep up with WoW, they are instituting a RealID system where your RL friends and family can chat via Battlenet and instead of a screen name like Vespasian I would see his real name Lem P. Dix or Furiel's real name Hugh G. Rection. While this was somewhat disturbing in that friends of friends could see your real name, the damage seemed somewhat limited on a privacy front.
Yesterday Blizzard announced that starting in Cataclysm (the next WoW expansion) if you wanted to post on the official forums, your real name will be printed on your post. They are doing this to "enhance community" and "cut down on trolls". In retrospect if SOE did that in 2003 I don't know that I would have posted on the forums at all. And as a result Alvis may never have formed. Are you guys of similar mindset about not using real names or am I just a paranoid schitzo?
xoxo

From the other SWG-related forum in which I troll for chicks:

This!
I think it's epic genius. I love the way they twist the knife with it, too - you can now "broadcast", ie spam every fucking forum - but if you do, everyone in the world will a) hate you and b) know where you live.
I am in awe.

I have mixed feelings on it. I see where they are coming from because the anonimity of the internet is what breeds alot of the ethugs and shit like that I don't like.
Converserly, I'm actually fairly shy until I get to know someone, so that anonimity is a blessing for me, and I never would have met all of you if SWG if that was in action then because I wouldn't have wanted my information broadcast like that.

Re: Real ID: in WoW
I won't be posting on their forums. Never have. If it goes any farther I won't be giving ActiBlizzion any more of my money... in the name of forum trolling/flame wars or not, there's a level of privacy I demand and they're right at the edge. Google/Facebook makes stalking and harassment easier this way and I suspect there's going to be some serious lawsuits from people getting flamed off-site.

This will be a bigger problem for me when I'm ridiculously famous and wealthy.

Re: Real ID: in WoW
I'm a bit torn. On one hand I would hate pissing off some loon who decided to see if I am really willing to use my M-9 to protect my family. One the other I think that the anonimity of the intertubes brings out the worst in some people.

It does, but I always try to keep in mind one thing, the best test of a person's character is if they still do the right thing when noone is around.Gandolfini wrote:One the other I think that the anonimity of the intertubes brings out the worst in some people.

Since when have you cared if people were around or not?Happyclam wrote:I masturbate all the time when no one is around.
The "right thing" doesn't mean the "right hand". Though it can be classified as such.

Re: Real ID: in WoW
I am not interested in posting if it posts real information about me. I prefer to choose when and what I reveal. Like that time I revealed my ass for pat to kiss it. Or when I had poison ivy on my nut sack.

Proof that if enough people whine, anyone will change their minds... Blizzard now says Real ID is going to be optional.

Re: Real ID: in WoW
I agree on the level of privacy but I also think that real life names means only the people who are really passionate and active leaders in the community would post. Forums would change from troll wars to possibly feedback getting more attention and people being less stupid. Than again I'm an idealist.

You're such an optimist. While I'd HOPE for that, I have a sneaking suspicion that it'd go downhill fast.

Yeah I know it would go downhill really fast. At least it would discourage stupid people from being stupid. Guess these forums give me hope that things like that can happen...................................................................................
Who am I kidding? These forums are a contradiction to my ideology of what forums should be.

Re: Real ID: in WoW
These forums are how forums should be. We're witty, intelligent, providing great insights into ways we can improve the world around us. We don't take most things serious and people should feel privileged that we'd talk to them and properly direct their conversations.Sniperwolf wrote:vespasian wrote:Sniperwolf wrote:I agree on the level of privacy but I also think that real life names means only the people who are really passionate and active leaders in the community would post.
